Does the skin on your neck and décolleté show your age?

As important as it is to protect facial skin, it’s just as important to care for all exposed skin.

Often forgotten, until the damage is already done, is the neck and décolleté areas. These are extensions of the face and should be treated as such. The skin on your neck and décolleté is significantly thinner than the skin on the face apart from the eyes. The thinner dermis and epidermis leave the skin in those areas prone to signs of aging including discoloration, fine lines and wrinkles.

The primary cause of damaged skin in this area is sun exposure. Excess sun exposure causes the breakdown of collagen and elastin resulting in fine lines and wrinkles. The sun also causes hyperpigmentation and redness as well. Other lifestyle factors that may impact the appearance of the neck and décolleté is diet, smoking, stress and sleep. Another concern is the term "tech neck". It is a term used to describe the lines and wrinkles formed in the neck area by continually looking down at a computer, phone or tablet.

Prevention is key

Most people are familiar with sunscreen on their face but fail to apply on the neck and décolleté. Procedures to improve the skin this area include lasers; chemical peels, microdermabrasion, micro needling and photo therapy. Topical products containing antioxidants, retinoids, peptides and AHA are also very beneficial.

It's important to remember that people see more than your face. Let’s talk about how we can improve those areas at your facial appointment or consultation.
